Strategy games that actually work on a commute
Strategy is my favorite genre and also the hardest to play on a phone. Real-time games punish interruptions, and interruptions are the whole nature of playing on the move. So I've been hunting for titles that survive a bumpy tram ride.
Iron Tide Command surprised me here. Its generous pause system means you can stop mid-battle, plan your fleet, and pick up exactly where you left off. That single feature makes it far more commute-friendly than most.
Turn-based games are the obvious safe bet, since they wait for you. But a well-designed real-time game with a pause button can offer more tension without the stress of losing everything when your stop arrives.
My rule of thumb: check for a pause and a quick-save before committing on mobile. If a strategy game respects that your attention comes in fragments, it'll survive on your phone far longer.
